Bicycle Coalition of Maine launches "BikeMaine," a major new ride

On its twentieth anniversary, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) is launching a major new 7-day bicycle event that will showcase Maine as a premier cycling destination on the East Coast. BCM is Maine’s leading voice for bicyclists with programs on safety, improved infrastructure and advocacy both in Augusta and Washington. As a result of BCM’s efforts, Maine has consistently ranked in the top ten bicycle-friendly states and as high as number two last year.

The new ride, called "BikeMaine," will be a weeklong rolling exploration of Maine with each year’s route taking place in a different part of the state. Bicyclists will camp in designated host communities each evening and eat community-prepared meals using Maine ingredients.

Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands: Songo Lock to Open Saturday to Boat Traffic

The lock at Songo Lock State Historic Site, a part of Sebago Lake State Park, Casco, will open to boat traffic at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 23, according to Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands officials.

The lock has been closed to boat traffic for more than two weeks because of heavy rains earlier this month and increased water levels in ponds and lakes in the surrounding area.

The heavy flow of water and increased lake levels required the opening of all of the flood control gates. The gates have remained open to allow Brandy Pond and Long Lake water levels to recede to more normal levels, Park Manager Matt McGuire of Sebago Lake State Park, said.

“We want to remind boaters that some of the flood control measures will remain open at the lock, so boaters will need to be cautious of the current,” McGuire said.

At its peak, the water level at the lock was more than 2 feet above normal.

In 2011, Maine joined 40 other states in allowing public charter school options for families of all income levels.  On May 1, 2012, the Maine Charter School Commission issued its first application package for potential founders of these new public education options, which are free to parents and open to all children without admissions tests.

The Maine Association for Charter Schools (MACS) will celebrate the great work accomplished by public charter schools across the country, where over 5,000 public chartered schools are serving 1.8 million students.
