Habitat’s Walks Going Strong After 25 Years

Please consider adding the following Habitat for Humanity events to your community event listings online or on the air.
Habitat believes all people are entitled to decent housing and builds homes with volunteers, and donated materials.  Over 800 volunteers work on any given home.  For the past 25 years, the Spring Walks have helped raise funds for the expenses related to building homes.   All funds from these events will help Habitat finish three homes in Westbrook this spring and begin another three homes in Freeport.

Hand shelling seed corn.

As spring approaches here we've got lots of little project to do around our little hobby farm!  One of the things we did this weekend was hand shell our seed stock for the corn crop.  This type of corn is called "Painted Mountain" and we grew a small patch of it last year (1000 sq.

A week of wish granting for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine

A week of wish granting for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine

PORTLAND, ME – March 14, 2011 – It will be a week of wish granting for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine as they work to grant wishes to three local children between March 22 - 29.

“It isn’t only one day these kids see their wish come true,” said Kate Vickery, program director at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine. “It’s the build up of excitement and magic that stretches on to create lasting memories for these deserving kids.”

On March 19, Lucien, 6, of Gorham will have a party at Longhorn Steakhouse in South Portland to celebrate with friends and family the granting of his wish: To meet characters from Walt Disney’s Toy Story. Lucien and his family will leave for Walt Disney World® days later, where he’ll meet the official Toy Story characters.

Time to order CHICKS!

Time to order CHICKS!

It’s that time of year!  Time to order chickens!  We will be replacing our layer flock this year.  We really prefer the “Buff Orpington” breed for several reasons.  They are relatively quiet, they are very even tempered and they are good with children.  If you are thinking of starting a layer flock here are a few tips on ordering.  At Blue Seal Feeds in Windham, where I get my birds, there is a minimum order of six birds.  If you are a family of four and you just want eggs for personal use this number is perfect!  At the height of their production in the first year we were getting up to 5 eggs per day!  Now it’s more like 1-3 per day and they are three years old.  If your family is larger or you want to sell eggs then you can certainly increase your flock size.  The breeds available are numerous; Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, New Hampshire Red, Golden Comets, White Leghorns, Buff Orpingtons, the list goes on.  Prices are a

Given the mythic nature of Forbert’s early career, one can be forgiven for wondering what he’s done since parting company with Geffen Records after they released The American in Me in 1992.
