Maine Maple Sunday Celebration in Poland

Maine Maple Sunday Celebration in Poland

A sure sign of spring is the coming of Maine Maple Sunday, celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday in March. This year it falls on Sunday, March 27th.

One of the more eventful local Maple Sunday celebrations is held annually at the Megquier Hill Farm at 260 Megquier Hill Road in Poland. The farm is the home of Peter and Kathie Bolduc and their 4 children. Nestled in the lower back field of this historic 1791 farmstead is their maple sugar house. Each year they welcome the public to come and experience the delight of the sap boiling down into its most perfect state: pure maple syrup.

Their celebration starts at 9am and runs until about 3pm. Visitors are treated to a hay wagon ride down to the sugarhouse.

Saturday will be the first public workout session for Maine's newest semi-professional
football team, the Maine Sabers.

For those who follow Maine football, the Maine Sabers is a familiar moniker. From 1991 through 1993,
the Sabers were Maine's dominant semi-professional football team.

In January, the Maine Sabers were officially admitted into the Eastern Football League, the oldest semi-
professional league in the nation, along with 15 other teams. The team is based in Portland and will
play at nearby fields such as Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium or Scarborough High School's stadium. The
team's 2011 schedule has yet to be finalized but the season will run from late June through September.

The team was organized by Stephen Goodrich, a former administrator with the original Sabers and
Jason McLeod, Windham High School football team's offensive coordinator.
