Chics are GROWING!

Chics are GROWING!

It has been about three weeks and my baby chicks are now definitely out of the cute and fluffy stage and into the awkward "teenage" stage.  They are very active and are quite vocal.  They still peep like little chicks though!  The are also very mischievous as you can see from the second photo where one is sitting ON TOP of the waterer!  I've got to come up with a way to keep them off that!!  This is the weekend when I will sadly do away with my current flock of layers.  =(  These new birds are going to need new housing ASAP and I've got to clean and disinfect the larger outdoor coop to make room for them.  It will be sad to see the old layers go but such is farm life.  Naturally there will not be any graphic pictures associated with that but I may blog about how things went.  More to come!

Planting Apple Trees!

Planting Apple Trees!

Despite the rainy weather my wife, Karen and I decided it was now or never for our apple trees!  We had special ordered them earlier and they arrived last week.  They pretty much need to go into the ground as soon as possible.  Fortunately for us the sun came out on Saturday and we hastily got to work.  I actually dug the holes last fall with my Gravely Tractor that has a planter drill.  I also worked in some manure and let it sit.    This helped considerably and made digging easier as we excavated the holes.  The dimensions of the holes are 2 feet in diameter and about 1.5-2 feet deep.  The roots of our trees were bare and we soaked the trees in water about an hour before planting.

House Tour in Bridgton

House Tour in Bridgton

House Tour in Bridgton, Maine on July 9, 2011

Bridgton, ME - The four-square Greek Revival is just one of the 10 notable properties slated for viewing on Saturday, July 9, 2011 during the house tour sponsored by the local Rufus Porter Museum.

21 South High Street (property # 7), built in 1870, is a muted, local example of a two-story late Greek Revival residence.

The four-square label designates the home as boxy, slightly deeper than
wider, and a model of efficient layout. The four downstairs rooms are open,
and reflect the layout upstairs. There are no long hallways.

It's tilling time! Well, if it ever stops raining!

It's been a while since I've posted a tractor video so here goes!  Last week before the rain came I had a brief opportunity to till the fields on my little hobby farm!  These beds I'm working up will be for corn and barley respectively.  The corn patch is the one I'm working on in the video.  The barley patch is behind me.  This video is, of course, a shameless promotion of my beloved Gravely two wheel tractor!  The last time I posted a tractor video it was with a snow blower.  This time the tiller is attached.  These machines are so versatile.  One tractor, many uses!  Enjoy!
