Chicken Hatch Part 4

It's official!  All the remaining eggs are viable!  We re-candled to be sure!  In one week the chics will arrive!

Chicken Hatch Part 3

I was wrong about the eggs!  They are viable!  Yahoo!  Only thing is I had to crack one open to find out... and it had an embryo inside!  I felt terrible since basically I killed it.  I know that all the eggs looked the same so I'm going to press onward with the eggs she has under her and see what happens.  We've got about two weeks to go!

Chicken Hatch Part 2

Chicken Hatch Part 2

We candled our eggs over the weekend... but didn't really see what we had hoped to see.  They looked like they had something dark attached to one side of the egg but I couldn't see any blood vessles or embryos.  I will check again soon.  We're not giving up yet!

Chicken Hatch Part 1

Chicken Hatch Part 1

We acquired 6 fertile eggs from our neighbor!  We moved our broody into the garage in a nice warm box with straw and a heat lamp.  We hollowed out a nest for her and put the eggs into it.  Then we placed her on top of the eggs.  In about a minute she sat right down and seemed VERY happy!  We also placed food and water in the box so she can have easy access to that.  Ever since then she has been faithfully sitting on those eggs!   We're so excited!  It takes 21 days to incubate the eggs but we will know more in about 5 days when we candle the eggs.   That is we shine a light through the egg to see if it is developing.  More on that in the next post!

Fresh eggs make great home made pasta!

Fresh eggs make great home made pasta!

When you have laying hens you quite often end up with extra eggs.  We like to make home made pasta using a roller machine and we've found that fresh eggs make the best pasta dough!  The dough is much more supple and cuts better with fresh eggs!  We made raviolis with this dough and they were fantastic!
