National Feral Cat Day, Oct. 15, is making up a group of events netting Maine’s Friends of Feral Felines (FoFF) a national Trailblazer Award with a $500 donation.

Alley Cat Allies honored FoFF is the first organization to create a Feral Cat Day event in Maine.  Alley Cat Allies started National Feral Cat Day in 2010 to promote greater recognition of the plight of feral cats. They were also the first organization to introduce and advocate for humane methods of feral cat care, particularly Trap-Neuter-Return, in the American animal protection community. Three year’s later, Maine’s FoFF was founded.

To celebrate National Feral Cat Day FoFF is hosting a Cupcakes for Cats sale, a Chocolate to the Rescue event at Thrifty Kitty Thrift Store, and a call for volunteers to help with renovations to their cat sanctuary facility in Windham.

Cupcakes for Cakes, a cat-themed cupcake sale, captured the national award.  Orders are being taken for Biddeford’s Brodie’s Kitchen to bake standard and mini cupcakes through Oct. 12. Each individual cupcake will be decorated with a cat face. Those ordering a half dozen or dozen will get a mixture of cat faces. The cupcakes also will come in a variety of flavors: chocolate, cinnamon, space, white and gold/yellow. Choices of frostings are also available. Completed orders will be dropped off at Thrifty Kitty, 651 Forest Ave., (second floor of the Odd Fellows Building at Portland’s Woodford’s Corner) and a number of other locations in the Portland area on Friday, Oct. 14. For a copy of the order form and brochure go to Half of the proceeds from the cupcake sale will be donated to FoFF.

Then, on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 am to 3 pm, FoFF is hosting Chocolate to the Rescue, complete with a chocolate fountain with treats, sale and open house at
Thrifty Kitty Thrift Store, 651 Forest Ave., (second floor of the Odd Fellows Building at Woodford’s Corner)
