Life as a musician means continual evolution.  Over the course of a career, any band worth paying attention to will pursue a sound, a direction, until it triggers a different idea and they’re chasing some other distant dream.

Bob Weir has a secure place in rock history as the Grateful Dead’s co-vocalist and what Andrew Clarke (in one of England’s leading newspapers, "The Independent") called the genre’s "greatest, if most eccentric rhythm guitarist." He is one of the genuinely fine songwriters of the late 20th century.

Movies: "Thor"

So you want to make a summer blockbuster?  Here’s all you have to do.

First, option a Marvel Comics hero -- any one of them should do the trick.  Next, scrape together a jillion dollars for special effects and hire a small army of (mostly French) CG professionals.  Then find yourself an appealing leading man -- say, blond Australian hunk Chris Hemsworth (Thor).  Toss in a few big name supporting actors like Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Rene Russo (Frigga, and please don’t snicker).

Freeport High School band The Modest Proposal was judged best of the MAMM SLAM

Freeport High School band The Modest Proposal was judged best of the MAMM SLAM

Port City Music Hall played host this past Saturday to the MAMM SLAM Finals, where six bands competed for the title of Best High School Band in Maine in front of more than 300 fans.  When the dust had settled, Freeport High School band The Modest Proposal were judged best of the lot and took home a prize package that included $1,000 in cash and a suite of other prizes that should get them well on the way to a career in the music business. The event was put on by the non-profit Maine Academy of Modern Music, with help from the Portland Music Foundation and MaineToday.com.

In addition to the cash prize, The Modest Proposal (www.facebook.com/themodestproposal) also were awarded the opening slot for Saturday night’s all-ages gig with Sparks The Rescue at Port City; a slot to play the Old Port Fest on the Maine Academy of Modern Music stage; and an opening slot for an Alive at 5 summer concert at Monument Square.

Cinco de Mayo Supper at Narramissic

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Bridgton Historical Society will hold a Mexican-American themed supper on Saturday, May 7, at “Narramissic,” the historic Peabody-Fitch farm in South Bridgton, weather permitting.   Cinco de Mayo, (Spanish for “Fifth of May”) is a holiday that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.  It is a holiday which is celebrated primarily in the Mexican state of Puebla and the US, where it has become a celebration of Mexican-American heritage.

The barn will be festively decorated, a piñata has been donated to add to the fun, and BHS board member Walt Bannon (and friends, perhaps) will supply the music.

Movies: "Fast Five"

With the arrival of “Fast Five” in movie theaters, I declare the summer movie season officially open.

This continuation of the “Fast and Furious” franchise delivers all the rock-’em-sock-’em mayhem summer audiences are presumably looking for, while borrowing plot points from the far more sophisticated “Oceans Eleven” series.  Still, it’s a rousing action pic set in exotic Rio de Janeiro, which makes for a different point of view, I guess.
