Calling All Photographers!

Lyceum Gallery is hosting a fine art photography competition and exhibit, Through the Lens 2012, open to all Maine photographers – professional, amateur, and student.

There are four categories within the competition.

  •  Black and White--no color in the image.
  • Color--including normal adjustments to color, contrast, and minor cloning.
  • Computer Composed--digital or traditional scanned images manipulated or collaged in a photo-editing program, such as Adobe Photoshop; artistic or painterly images created using a photo-editing program; the addition of original art drawn or created from scratch in a photo-editing program.
  • Student--high school and younger

Photographers may enter one or more categories, with a maximum of 4 photo entries in total. Each photo may only be entered in one category.

Jose Leiva, award winning photojournalist for the Lewiston Sun Journal and freelance commercial photographer, will be the award judge for the competition.

"With 45 years as a photographer, Jose brings a trained eye and creative mind to Through the Lens," says Tamera Grieshaber, curator of Lyceum Gallery. "We feel very privileged to have his expertise as our judge."

The cash awards are $200, $100, $75 for the each of the first three categories. The Student category cash prizes are $100, $75, and $50.

"The advent of digital cameras has encouraged many more people to experiment with photography," explained Grieshaber. "It is much easier to shoot multiple images and examine them without having to wait for prints to be developed. Skills begin to build more rapidly than 20 years ago. Competitions, such as Through the Lens, are another step for photographers to improve their skills."

The deadline for submission is midnight, March 25, 2011. The cost to enter is $10 per photo or $35 for four photos. Student submissions are $5 per photo or four for $15. All pieces submitted must be available for sale.

The minimum print size is 8 x 8 inches, not including the frame. The maximum print size, including the frame, is 30 x 36 inches. For panoramic or odd shapes, convert overall size to square inches, i.e. 1080 square inches or less.

Artwork selected for the exhibit must be framed and ready for gallery hanging. All mats must be white or near white. Unframed pieces printed on metal and canvas wraps will also be accepted.

All art work must be submitted digitally, either on CD, DVD or by email. The specific guidelines and submission forms are available on the Lyceum Gallery website at: http://www.lyceumgallery.com/Lyceum_Gallery/Call_to_Artists.html

Lyceum Gallery is located at 49 Lisbon Street, Lewiston. Questions may be sent to lyceumgallery@me.com.
